Department of Periodontics & Implantology

The term periodontium arises from Greek word “Peri” meaning around and “Odont” meaning tooth thus it can be defined as the tissue investing and supporting the teeth. The branch of Periodontology consists of periodontics and implantology. Periodontics deals with the study and preservation of periodontium, whereas in implantology we deal with the meticulous fixed replacement of already lost teeth. The branch also has a vital role in preventive measures of periodontal diseases by educating, motivating and instructing the community at different levels.

The department is well equipped with all the routine and advanced surgical armamentarium. These include a variety of bone graft materials, GTR membranes, surgical instruments, soft tissue diode laser, electrocautery, centrifugation machine and LDD systems. A broad range of procedures from  non-surgical to surgical therapy including SRP, gingivectoy/ gingivoplasty, curettage, ENAP, LANAP, periodontal flap surgeries, periodontal plastic surgery, gingival de-pigmentation, lip repositioning, root coverage  using soft- tissue grafts, PRF placement for regeneration, root conditioning, sinus lift (direct and indirect), socket preservation, ridge augmentation and placement of dental implants  are routinely performed with precision, knowledge and skill in the department.

The department is always enthusiastic for organising continuous dental education (CDE) programmes like “CBCT- a paradigm shift in the planning of dental implants” and “dental implants placement- A prostho- perio inter-relationship” which were recently conducted.

The department’s orientation towards research and academics is well reflected in its continuous endeavour to publish papers in various national and inter- national journals. Recently we have the credit of an ICMR sponsored, multicentre original research on “scope of quality oral health care in improving pregnancy outcomes and childbirth: A clinical prospective study”.
